sikhs-in-america-progress: Cadet Simratpal Singh, West Point class of 2010.
Simratpal had to cut his hair to join the US Army. Even though this was a very difficult decision Simratpal decided that he wanted to serve his country and to hopefully pave the way for Sikhs to eventually keep their hair if they join the Army. Sikhs who wear turbans or keep their hair are currently not allowed to actively serve in the US military. In order to serve, Sikhs must cut their hair. Sikh organizations are fighting this requirement because they believe that people should not have to choose between their religion and country. Armies in Britain, Canada, and India allow Sikhs to keep their turbans.
